The Encryption and Lawful Access Debate in Thailand and the U.S.: One Step Forward and Two Steps Back

Governments in both Asia and the West are enacting laws designed to compel Internet service providers, platforms, and enterprises to disclose subscriber user data, including emails, search and location histories, chats, photos, and even health information in response to lawful government access requests. In Thailand, the government is seeking to expand its authority to require government access to encryption keys and account login information, as well as https secure websites. This session will discuss the Thai government’s efforts to expand its authority and control over ISPs and service operators, and the legal and commercial ramifications resulting from these changes, as they relate to data privacy and security.
