Privacy Law in Australia – New Frontiers of Big Data and Breach Reporting

Presented at Data Privacy Asia 2016 conference

After almost 5 years of prevarication, mandatory data breach reporting is about to be implemented in Australia. With data security becoming a major issue in the digital age, this legislation will impact businesses that have a presence in Australia. Additionally, Big data and data analytics are now a fact of life. The Australian Privacy legislation, even though it was largely re-stated in 2014, was not drafted to cover Big Data. The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner has recently released a draft policy guide on Big Data. This session will review these 2 developments and analyse the steps that will need to be taken by businesses doing business in Australia to ensure compliance.
