New Chief Privacy Officers are being created all the time, as firms recognise the central role privacy is playing in our society and their businesses. However the scope of this role varies between companies and is often rapidly evolving. There are already differences in what a Chief Privacy Officer is responsible for in the United States and Europe, and countries with more recent privacy legislation may have different expectations of their CPOs. The role may develop in different directions possibly growing into a wider function addressing questions around data ethics and the relationship between the corporate and individual, on alternatively becoming an administrative function as legal compliance obligations become more onerous. Concepts such as Accountability and the GDPR’s Mandatory Data Protection Officer requirement may influence the shape of things to come. What will happen? What should happen?
